About Carrie Horwood

Carrie Horwood is a Cathedral trained Stonemason, with a degree in sculpture and a natural aptitude for letter cutting, she is a unique individual. Her sculptures reflect her love of fluid movement, always trying to push the boundaries of the stone she carves and find that elusive form. She loves to carve innocent thoughts and feelings and each sculpture be it figurative or abstract hopefully portrays this.
Carrie now works out of Taurus Crafts in Lydney on the edge of The Beautiful Forest of Dean. She loves to carve Welsh slate for her fluid water ripples and mathematical spirals. Forest of Dean Sandstone comes in all colours and the red polishes up beautifully for letter cutting, due to it`s non-porous nature it also holds water beautifully which changes the intensity of the colours. Tetbury limestone is her favourite for carving portraiture and figurative sculpture, the right piece will polish up to a silk like finish. Carrie`s training and experience as a stonemason helps her develop her stone carving with discipline as well as freedom.

Artist Statement of Carrie Horwood

Carrie Horwood`s Personal Statement,
I carve evocative shapes and forms as well as figures and faces. I have the skill of a stonemason and the creativity of an artist.
I also have the ability to carve exact portraits using models I have made from people or animals
I want to create beauty, movement and fluidity in a material that is hard unforgiving and static. My carvings come from the experiances of my life so far, I have to carve what I see and follow the paths set for me by my ideas.
I love to carve figurative forms with the flow of hair and fabric enveloping the forms.
This sometimes leads me to an abstract form, but I don`t set out to intentially create abstract art-these come from the development of my ideas.
I find the excitement and passion that drives me on comes from seeing my work develop and mature as each year passes.
